Objective Of The Workshop
The key objective of the AstraZeneca Workshop in Biomedical Sciences is to provide students of biological, pharmaceutical and chemical sciences a hands-on experience of the research methodologies and techniques in these areas within the environment of a pharmaceutical research organization engaged in drug discovery. This program is designed to supplement and contribute to the on-going objectives of AZI while simultaneously providing such a learning experience to the students. It has been conceived with a view to enrich the student with the principles and techniques of different disciplines such as molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology or pharmaceutical sciences. Many of these very same principles and techniques are used in laboratories across the world to address academic questions, while we at AZ R and D India apply them to facilitate the translation of innovative ideas into novel products of diagnostic or therapeutic importance. Duration Of The Workshop
The program begins 15th May, 2007 , and spans over a period of 10 to12 weeks. Every selected trainee is expected to report on the first day and work through the program for the stipulated period to complete the assignment. It is important to note that trainees are not permitted to leave before completion of the workshop.
Application & Selection
Students who are currently pursuing their final year M.Tech / M.Sc.(biochemistry / microbiology / biotechnology / molecular biology / life-sciences, Bioinformatics) or M.Pharm are eligible to apply for this workshop. In addition, postgraduates who have completed these programmes in 2006 will also be eligible. There is no prescribed application form. Students may send-in a detailed resume with their areas of specialisation and interest, along with a recommendation letter from the respective Head of the Department or Institution. All applications received will be scrutinised by a panel of selectors, and selection of trainees for this program shall be based purely on the individuals academic performance, the recommendation from the referee and the area of specialisation. A maximum of 8 to 10 trainees from various institutes shall be selected for this workshop. Students who are selected will be intimated by email/letter, and they in-turn must confirm their participation within a week of receiving their intimation letters.
Nature & Structure Of Workshop
Each of the trainees shall be assigned specific tasks in one of the projects in the organization, and will report to the designated supervisor. A majority of the work for almost all of the trainees involves basic experimental techniques in one or more areas that include microbiology, recombinant DNA technology, pharmacokinetics, biochemistry, medicinal chemistry or molecular biology. Some of the trainees may work on in silico projects in the laboratory of computer-aided drug design (CADD).
Other Details
- Selected trainees will be required to make their own arrangements for accommodation during their stay in Bangalore . AZ will not be able to take any responsibility for this aspect
- Each selected trainee in this workshop will receive a stipend of Rs.6500/-, after completion of this workshop. If trainees arrive from outside Bangalore , they will be reimbursed for their travel (to and fro second class rail fare or bus fare) which will also be paid at the end of the workshop.
- For Proprietary reasons, hard or soft copy of the Project Report will not be provided to the students and will remain within the organisation. However, a Certificate will be issued to the student upon completion of their project work.
